My father was on his way to Belawai and reading his book. It must have been quite comfortable on the upper deck of the Chinese motor launch the Sibu Photographic society had chartered for the special trip.
He was all ready with his bed roll all tired up with a rope. He would have his blanket and even mosquito net in the huge pack. Probably he even brought two pillows.
The trip was a nice for him according to my mother as he was to be away for three days and two nights. He actually did not like the sun because he would get sunburnt easily. But he did manage.
According to my mother he seldom complained about anything, especially when he travelled.
The friend who took this photo must have found my father most quiet, and relaxed in his own way.
About 30 members took this trip.
A few words about the Kayan MAT. The rattan used then was so fine that it was almost like textile. The mat was cooling to use on hot days and warm at night. The strength of the rattan was so strong that no matter how we folded the mat or used the mat, it was "unbreakable".
This mat was with us from the 1950's until my children were born! So indeed a Kayan mat in the olden days was a lifelong possession.
Each time I look at a bed roll owned by a person from the ULU I would think of how my own father carried his bed roll for his safari trip in Belawai.
