Lau Nga Hung : The First Foochow Woman Principal in Sibu

Ms. Lau Nga Hung was born in Fujian and came out to Sibu as a migrant teacher on her own. She was employed by the management board of Tung Hua School which later developed into both primary and secondary schools, as was the common norm in those days.

She was outspoken, articulate, educated and very dedicated. She was a very focused lady and was well respected by the local community.

She served Tung Hua School before and after the war, until she retired.

After she retired, she used her own savings to start a very much needed private school, called Sibu Secondary School in Oya Road to help those who could not pass primary six Entrance Examination and Sarawak Junior. The school operated for more than 15 years until the government changed its education policies and abolished the different public examinations to allow students to remain in school until Form Five, or until they are 16 years old.

With no students, the private school closed and she fully retired a second time, leaving her quite a disappointed educationist.

She was well known as a frugal educationist and throughout her life, she either walked or cycled.

She was also well known as a Sibu Foochow woman who loved to wear cheong sam or qipao.
