Sibu Tales : Hock Ming Road and Wharf

 119A Jalan Kampong Hilir, Sibu

As the kampong grew with increasing population, the Hock Ming wharf saw more and more commuters from as far as Bawang Assan, Bukit Lan and other Chinese villagers on the west bank of the Igan.

This has been a very interesting access for the Chinese villagers of Sg. Bidut to be able to use the path to the main road called Kampong Hilir Road. Commuters would either use the bus, or private taxi or their own motor bikes to go to Sibu town for work or for some official business.

As
The small concrete path is between two big kampong houses.

A narrow cement path leads from Kampong Hilir Road to the river bank and jetty or small wharf.

Many of the commuters come from the villages as far as Bukit Lan. With motor bikes they can find better income jobs in Sibu and they don't need to depend on agriculture.

Today the ferry is much bigger to accommodate motor bikes and more passengers.

The Hock Ming Road which is on the left bank of the Igan is one of the longest roads in Sibu division. It can reach Tanjong Manis.

This is unique sharing of accessibility in Sarawak which says a lot about racial harmony and love for one's neighbours.
