A Wedding Photo from Kapit

My school mate Evelyn Baughman posted a photo of a longhouse wedding, officiated by her father the Reverend Burr Baughman sometime ago on Facebook.

This wedding took place at the Kulleh Longhouse. Iban longhouses are named after their longhouse chiefs. So during the period of his  chieftainship, the longhouse carries his name. Thus today, after probably more than 50 years (this photo was taken in 1960's) it would be hard to name the longhouse if we do not know the name of the new chief, unless the descendants of this couple can share some information . Furthermore, the longhouse might have shifted some where else, a little inland or a little downriver.

And by coincidence, by the power of the social media, I found some interesting information.

The man on the right next to the bridesmaid (Evelyn Baughman) is now Penghulu Baleng , who is residing in Sibu, and is the husband of my school mate, Ipun Kana who was in Form 2 when I was in Form 1. Ipun's sister, Lina and I are good friends in Miri.

the man on the extreme left is Salleh.

And best of all, by sharing this photo on my Facebook, my nephew, Robert Entalai (who studied in the Methodist School, Sibu)  provided further information. The bridegroom is Mr. Jamit, and the bride is the Tuai Rumah's daughter.

The eldest son of the couple, Moscow Jamit, was a Sibu athlete. He was a member of Sacred Heart's Gold Medal 4 x 100 meters relay team with Ian Kuntai (my English Teachers' College trainee) during the Sibu Inter Shook Sports in the mid 80's

The other missionary is Ernest Heard who is from Tennessee and is married to a Kapit girl, Swan Choo.

The Tuai Rumah Kulleh (later Pemancha) must be the man on the right with the little boy.

How good every one looks in their western clothes. The bride is beautiful and so is the bridesmaid.

I had thought of making a good collection of Wedding Photos from Sarawak, but my endeavour is now on hold. May be I should start again and ask help from friends.

This photo from Kapit, from Evelyn Baughtman is a real gem!! Praise God. Thank you Evelyn Baughman.

PS Many of Rev Baughman's photos can be found on the Getty Images Website. Please have a look.
