Baram Tales : Hwang Teck Sii

Hwang Teck Sii was one of the first Foochow pioneers of Poyut-Lubok Nibong. He had first set foot in Sibu to be with the Foochow settlers there but later he was recruited by Hii Nguong Shern to be part of the 90 Foochow pioneering team of Poyut Lubok Nibong in  1927.

Huang Teck Sii

His Fujian ancestral home was in Minqing 9 Du. By joining Hii Nguong Sherng he opened up more than 10 acres of land for rubber planting. As he was a late comer to Sibu, like Hii Nguong Sherng he was not entitled to  "free land" under the Foochow Settlement Project. In the first five years, he planted rubber for t he settlement and at the same time he was water carrier for the local Malay headman of Kampong Lubok Nibong. He established a very good relationship with the kampong people .

He and the other Foochow pioneers showed their Foochow spirit and character : they were hardworking, full of integrity and honesty. Their words were their honour.

After Hua Nam Primary School was established in 1936, he was the Treasure of the Management Board of the School for many years.

He and his friend established the Sin Hin Rice and Rubber Mill in Lubok Nibong  1952 which became a land mark in the Mid Baram Valley. He joined the Foochow Agro Investment Project and planted more rubber in 1957.

He was married to Wong San Mui and together they had 9 children, 7 boys and 2 girls.
