Miri : Gawai Dayak Bazaar 2022

How interesting it is to look at different types of food in just one small area.\

The Gawai Dayak Bazaar is organized by the Dayak Youths - with the acroynm of GADS.

This is the logo of the GADS, the organizer of the Gawai Bazaar 2022.

The Bazaar is put up on a piece of land owned by Naim Cendera in Permyjaya. Under as many as 40 tents, the stall owners pay 800 ringgit each and it is allowed for three friends to share the rental for 20 days. All utilities are paid by the organizers including street cleaning at night and a security guard. Mobile toilets are provided at both ends of the bazaar.

There is a stage for performance and every night some people take to the stage, whether they have an audience or not.

Well the stalls are quite well patronized, especially when people are quite at ease to come out to play so to speak after the MCO (two years 2020 and 2021).

Some stalls have outstanding food displays, some are just mediocre. Langkau Punch seems to be attractive but is not offered by every one, at 5 ringgit a glass. Bottled tuak is also sold by some stalls. But I must say, pork has its staying power and the BBQ pork of every part of the animal seems to be the favourite take away of those who drop by. Many stay for hours sitting under the tents and gossip away.

It does have some kind of longhouse ambiance.

Most customers seem to come with a smile...and take makes a bazaar worth while attending. Most importantly stall owners have to be friendly, interested in introducing their food to their customers, have eye contact....

Photos to share with you:

This umai babi kulit is a pleasant surprise. I bought some to take home and enjoyed it more with hot rice and some fried fish - creating a village kind of dinner. Very rustic, very refreshing.

The Lechon by owners from Long Atip is really good. I hope Abel and his brother in law and friends will open a stall one day in Miri. Very professionally done!! Congratulations.

However, some parting words from me.....

Some food though must be covered if the turn over is slow. And of  course the music is too loud. And....and...and the amount of smoke cannot be controlled unfortunately.

See you next year.
