I was transferred from Methodist School, Sibu to Kolej TDTH Bujang in 1987 December and I arrived just in time for the School staff meeting for the year 1988. It was a complete change of scenario for me and in a way it was like a cultural shock. I was jumping from a Christian school to a secular school (which later turned out to be very Islamic).
The school hall was small compared to the one I was used to in Sibu. Our Methodist School Hall was able to seat 1500 students comfortably. And this school hall was for standing room only. Teachers sat on the stage, another difference which I soon grow to really feel uncomfortable. We would be sitting down and the students would be standing for as long as one hour or more. Being a very egalitarian person in outlook, I found it almost intolerable that sometimes I would really like to excuse myself from the stage!!
That was the foremost thought I had in my mind when I joined the school. I was to have many thoughts throughout my 2 and half years in this school.
I could not share my personal thoughts with any one then just in case I offended some one. So I kept it to myself. I was afraid that someone would say this to me...
"Wah you feel sorry for the students standing throughout the assembly, why don't you donate the chairs to the school?"
Would that be the retort I get then?
Would I get that retort now?
No one can control another person's tongue.
But I wish all of us would be gentle with our tongue. Kindness is a virtue.
