Ching Hua, a great artist born in Sg, Merah painted this beautiful scene of Nam Mee Confectionery shop which is along the main road in Sg Merah.
Sg Merah in the early days had only one road in fact. two rows of wooden shops face each other on the east bank of the Seduan River, which another two rows of wooden shops face each other along the main road on the western bank of the river.
It was always fun to sit on the railings of the bridge during the sunset hours. Boys had fun whistling at lovely young girls passing by....
In the early days every one cycled and I did too from my grandfather's house to Sg Merah during the holidays.
Nam Mee is still owned by Mr and Mrs. Chieng and they still make kompia, biscuits and other sweet pastries. the best time to buy his pastry is in the evening. Just drive by if you have a car and pick whatever you need along the five foot way. The couple operate till quite late at night.
And interestingly I met the son who was an English teacher teaching in Kiong Hin Secondary School in Sg Teku during one English training course in Sibu.
I was thinking to myself at that time how small our world was.
This painting is really memorable. thank you Ching Hua for sharing it on Face Book.
