Baby Food, Baby Things.....

My cousin has always been a very wealthy woman as she is married into a rich family.

Whenever we ladies gathered at our grandmother's house we would often hear how even more wealthy she had become.

When she gave birth to her first two children, my other cousins and I were still in school, so we had plenty to learn from her mother and from her.

I particularly learned three things about baby food.

My aunt and she gave the kids eggs with Bovril. Most of us had hardboiled eggs, with some soy bean sauce. But we had never heard of children having eggs with Bovril which was then rather pricey.

Aunt would source out the best of mee sua from Sibu and even Sarikei. Grandma and mum would make mee sua, chicken soup....but the mee sua was dry, and two fried eggs would be added to the dry mee sua.
It must have been very tasty because the babies just loved it, and would all in the bowl.

Aunt would dry the mee sua, but she would clip off the top ends which were the rougher part of the noodles. And these she would give to her amahs to cook. The rougher and coarse ends of the mee sua are called Mien Tou, and not many like it. However I prefer mien tou because there is more to chew. They make a good breakfast. Just boil the mien tou, and then add some soy sauce, fried peanuts and some omelette.

Another good tip we learned from Aunt and Cousin was the use of disposable diapers. That was way back in 1972 in Sibu. while most new mothers bought reusuable disapers, my cousin had started to use the disposable ones!

How lucky her babies were.
