Sibu : How to transport Bricks Downriver

As people become more affluent down river, they would like to improve and renovate their wooden houses. Some may even want to build new concrete houses.

In fact, cement was introduced to the people of Sibu in 1926 when the contractor who built the Lau King Howe Hospital used cement. A large group of people came to see if the cement could really solidify!!

My grandfather Tiong Kung Ping used to tell us that for many days the Foochows and people of other races talked about the new product - cement. They were trying to work out how by mixing sand, water and cement powder could bring about a solid mass.

There after the shops and many government buildings of Sibu used concrete.

In my January 2023 trip to Sibu I was happy to see this river motor launch was filled up by workers. Bricks were placed in the front of the boat. Most probably the bricks were going down river to the Igan kampongs which are still not connected by roads.
