The Blue House

The Blue House or Mansion was built in the 1880's by Cheong Fatt Tze.

This majestic mansion in Georgetown (Penang) was built by master craftsmen from China using building materials imported from Europe. It took them 7 years (1896 to 1904) to complete the mansion.Image may contain: sky, cloud and outdoor

The Mansion, which today is a tourist attraction site, has 38 rooms, 5 courtyards, 7 siarcases and 220 windows.Image may contain: house, sky and outdoor

It was a great status symbol for Cheong Fatt Tze. No photo description available.

This kind of house is the only one found in South East Asia. There are only three of them outside China. It represents the best of the 18th and 19th century Chinese architecture and is laid out according to Chinese Feng Shui principles.

When visitors look at the mansion closely they would be amazed by the intricate carvings, chien nien and Chinese lattice work.

Besides, the mansion also has art nouveau stained glass, Gothic louvered windows and Stoke on Trent geometric floor tiles.

In 2000, the Cheong Fatt Tze mansion received the inaugural Unesco Asia-Pacific Heritage Conservation Award, selected as the ‘Most Excellent Project’ in the Asia Pacific Rim.

Tours are available while tickets may be purchased at the Mansion.
Location: 14, Leith Street, 10200 Penang
