Several places in Mengzi of Yunnan had direct French influence.

Hunkui Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty signed the Sangquanruguo thus allowing the French to open business outside of Mengzi (South East Lake Village) after 1889. Some other foreign powers like Japan and the United States also opened their consulates here. The French Customs of Mengzi acutally was opened until 1940!! In fact after the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japan in 1938 Mengzi was the seat of the Alliance University of the Chinese (they had moved from places like Beijing)
