Comfort Women and Old Street of Sibu - Japanese Era

During the Japanese Occupation, the Japanese Commandent took over the Government Offices and governed Occupied Sibu very sternly.

All citizens must give a salute and a bow to a Japanese soldier upon meeting him. Even women have to salute and bowl

Failing to greet the Japanese, a Chinese man and woman would be badly slapped.

The Old Street many remember was a favourite place for the Japanese to hang out. On the first floor of two of the shop lots housed the comfort women specially selected by the Japanese officers. Most of the women selected were fair, slim and pretty. Although a few were local indigenous women, most were Chinese women who were forced to entertain the soldiers.

That was for 3 years and 8 months. It was a traumatic time for most people.
