Shan Yao Dioscorea opposita

Chinese yam (Chinese: 山药) and huáishān (怀(淮))
It produces tubers which can measure up to 1 m long and weight up to 2.5 kg.

The Chinese believe in its medicinal benefits. It is used to treat poor appetite, chronic diarrhea, asthma, dry coughts, fequent urination and diabetes.
Fresh Shan Yao can be eaten raw, baked, boiled, fried, mashed and in soup. It is also available in liquid, capsules, dried root, extract or tea, from Chinese medicine shops.
A favourite way of cooking shan yao is to boil some chicken with the several slices of the tuber, goji berries and red dates, ginger. It is a nourishing soup. If you cannot get fresh shan yao tubers, you can buy the dried ones from Chinese medicine shops.
