Lam Soon's Sunflower oil

the Halal chop is very important in Malaysia for without it the Muslims will not buy the cooking oil.

When I was travelling in Fujian I came across a lot of sunflower fields and fellow Focchow farmers were harvesting the flowers which will later be processed into sunflower oil.

Besides sunflower seeds, the Foochows also plant lots of canola (yiu chai) and tea flower. So making cooking oil at home has been a traditional home industry for many centuries.

My maternal grandmother used to tell us how fragrant it was in the village in Keh Tou Buoh (her village) when the villagers started to press oil from the various kinds of seeds. She said the most important oil was from the tea flower (which was also medicinal). The oil from yiu chai was common and easier to press.

Sunflower oil was very tasty too.
