Tung Hua Secondary School before Malaysia
The Tung Hua Secondary School is a Chinese school built before the Second World War in Sibu. It was established in 1922 along the Wire Road ( later Queensway and now Jalan Tun Haji Openg). It only had 30 students to start with.
The establishment of the school was the desire of the Chinese rubber garden owners who had prospered in those early days. Their children were of school going age and they needed a school nearby.
The first headmaster was Lau Tiu Kee and the Chairman of the board Soon Ah Hing. Other members were Kong Chui Soon, Ho Siong Kang, Hii Chuong Keng, Kong Boi Chiong, Chong Kung Huat, Tan Chuan Hock and Yong Chu Seng.
The Secondary School was established in 1934 with a staff of 12 and about 120 students. In 1938 Wong Cheng Ang (a university graduate was made principal) and Lau Hieng Jen was the principal just befoe the war from 1939 to 1942. During the Japanese war years Tiang Kwong Boi was the Principal and Japanese was taught in the school.
Interestingly, the principal appointed after the war was Ms. Wong Ya Hung. She was probably the first Foochow woman to hold the principalship of a school in the Rajang Valley. She was with the school from 1946 to 1962. She saw the separation of the joint administration of Tiong Hin Secondary School and Tung Hua Secondary School in 1953 and 3 years later, the school became a Government aided school.
Under the next principal, Sia Wan Kai (1963-65) the school phased out its Chinese medium of insturction and English became the main medium of instruction.
