The red durian is smaller than the normal durian. Yes the skin of the fruit is red, brilliant red, but the spikes are longer and not so stiff. There fore the spikes do not pierce any one.
It is not easy to prise open the skin, so it does take some skill to use a knife and cut a fruit open. There are not many seeds in a fruit and the flesh is not so thick.
There is a bit of pungent smell but it is not as horrible as most people think. The texture is sticky but the flesh is not mushy.
