Sibu Tales : Hummingbird Tree




The red flowers are very pretty and edible too.
This is a common tree in Sibu.

Sesbania grandiflora also known as agate is a small tree. It could have originated in India or Southeast Asia and grows primarily in hot and humid tropical areas of the world. 

Commonly it is known as vegetable hummingbird in English, Ta-Hua in Chinese. It belongs to family Leguminosae and has been widely used in Ayurveda .

 Leaves, seeds, pods and flowers of S. grandiflora are edible. Flowers are the most widely used part, and white flowers are preferred to the red. The tree has a life span of about 20 years.

the Thais eat the flowers after steaming them.
