Nang Chong Stories : Goji Berries

My ngie mah (maternal grandmother) towards the last four years of her life suffered from total loss of vision.

By then all of us tried to give her the best of food, and especially goji berries. Perhaps a little too late. She really suffered a lot, as she never thought that she could go blind . She slowly turned into a small framed old woman who was weak and tearful. We suffered as much as she did. My aunts and uncles tried to make her life easier by giving her a  good flush toilet in their new but smaller Nang Chong house. She was able to move about in her own ways. A young grandchild would always be with her.

When she came to visit us in Sibu, we would always be very attentive. She would move slowly and someone would lead her. It was not easy for her to bear with sightless-ness.

However she continued to have good conversation with us and would remind us of our history.

Studies have shown that these berries have high level of antioxidants similar to saffron and bell peppers. Well it was too late for her but she sportingly ate them. Sometimes she would chew a few .

Many eateries in Miri offer good chicken feet soup with goji berries and ginseng for men's health.

We also learnt that it can lower blood sugar (which helped me a bit) and improve and recover cells that help produce insulin.
