Miri : Chinese Yam and Native Yam

Chinese yams are pricey and they are called betel nut yams or bilong wo. They are especially tasty and sticky in texture.

However the indigenous yams are not of such good quality but they are also edible.

Chinese yams are hard to grow. They are usually grown from September to be ready for Chinese new year.

Most Chinese must have yams for Chinese New Year because mashed yam or yam soup signifies leadership and success. So it is very good to ask family members to eat more yam during Chinese New Year.
