Hidden Indian Mosque in Kuching

There is a "hidden" Indian Mosque in Kuching.

It is interesting how shops and roads had developed around it since the 19th century and today, it seems as if it is a hidden mosque.

A very narrow passageway leads from Indian Street to Gambier Road. If you follow this passage way you will find the mosque hidden away. It is not a small mosque as it can accomodate up to 1500 worshippers on Fridays.

Walking through the passage way from India Street to Gambier Road is often a "chilly" time because some how the temperature there seems to be a little lower than outside which could be very hot. And then the aroma from the spices sold by the shops in Gambier Road will hit you. It can be a very inspirational moment. One can get very very genuine spice powders and saffron (just to mention one) in some of the shops. The shop owners would know their customers and even their grandmothers and grand aunts. some have been around for so long!!

This mosque was originally built by the Indian Muslim community in the mid 19th century.

Tired Muslim travellers in the past could spend a night in  the mosque. And interestingly in those far away days, many would have just berthed their prahu on the bank of the Sarawak River.

Anyone can use the passage way as a short cut between India Street and Gambier Road.
