Sarawakian Local Delights : Umai
Umai is a Melanau specialty. It is made from the best of the freshly caught fish. Mukah and Dalat Melanaus may have different ways of preparing Umai.
Fresh tenggiri (mackerel) or duai (pomfret) is sliced thinly and then given a dressing of lime juices, salt, chillies, some sesame oil, seasoning) Add lots of slices of shallots and garlic. The resulting dish is delectable . It goes well with freshly cooked rice and sago.
Umai is best made a home and served to small groups of people. But the best umai is still made by the Melanaus especially in Mukah, Igan, Dalat, and Matu-Daro.
