Known also as Job's tears, Chinese pearl barley, Coix lacryma-jobi, adlay seed, Coixseed, and ma yuen. It is boiled by most Chinese families in the ancient days to combat feverish conditions, cool body, relieve diarrhoea, improve urination and alleviate indigestion. It also promotes appetite.
When my maternal grandmother rememebered to boil some for every one to drink. she would buy a small amount to boil
some rock sugar added to the soup made the eating just so perfect. She used to tell us that it was the best cure for pimples. That might be true because many of my cousins did not have many pimples.
(N.B. She did grow a few plants around the old house and she would harvest some of the barley too.
But as she grew older, people forgot all about the pearl barley shrubs in the back yard.
