Sibu Tales : Canned Tomato Soup
When we were growing up in Sibu, a tin of Campbell soup was ONE dollar each but not many children like the soup so parents did not buy this.
We all liked the Chicken soup from Campbell's better. Perhaps it was the sourness of the tomato soup which made us not to like it.
Form Two Domestic Science Course Work
For our Home Science course work, we had to go to the best shop in town , which at that time was Kim Guan Siang, to do research on food. We had to learn about imported food and record what the shop had. After we had done that we had to use the cash given by our Home Science teacher to buy enough supply from the shop to cook up a balanced meal for two people. We had to choose some fresh food , spices, etc. But we should not choose tinned stuff.
We bought Golden Churn butter and some jam too to make scones.
The shop assistant was keen for us girls to buy more and he introduced all sorts of tinned stuff including Tomato Soup. He told us that it was the kind of soup favoured by the Ang Mohs and that we did not have Ang Moh taste. We smiled.
Years later when we grew up we liked the tomato soup served in plush hotels. People's tastes buds do change with time.
