Sibu Tales : The Parents in Law of Tiong Kung Ping

My Great Grandparents on the Chong side, i.e. parents of my paternal grandmother who originally came from Fuqing, China, migrated to Java and Singapore and then finally settled down in Sibu during their old age to be with their only son, Chong Jin Bok, arriving in Sibu probably around 1930's. They acquired rubber land and cultivated rubber in Kwong Ann area in Sungei Merah. This huge piece of land was next to my grandfather's land..

My Great Grandfather is Chong Swee Kim. According to family accounts he was a religious Methodist, helped in church work etc. Most probably he had some English education.

We also learned from an aunt that he could have helped a grand aunt set up a cement and textile factory in Java.

He was industrious and accumulated a bit of land in Bintangor, and Sibu. His son Chong Jin Bok inherited most of his rubber estate. Today a road named after my grand uncle, Jalan Chong Jin Bok, crosses that piece of property which his sons developed in the 1990's.

My family does not have much information about our great grandparents Chong because our grandmother Chong passed away very young at the age of 38, and my father was hardly 17 years old.

It will be good if I could find out more about them.
