The Chiaw Nam or Kiew Nan (Foochow pinyin) School in Marudi (Poyut) was established after the World War 2 when the community leaders thought that it was time to educate their young in their own area. There were about 30 children who needed to have a school. Pioneer Ling Toh Ming, a Foochow, started the ball rolling.

According to a write up he led not just Foochows but some Cantonese and Minnang men in this endeavour.

1. Liong Ang Ching (Cantonese)
2. Chua Ing Chung (Minnang)
3. Wong Dah Lee (Foochow Minqing)
4. Wong Teck Cheh (Cantonese)
5. Yong Ho Deng (Cantonese)
6. Kiing Sie Moh (Foochow Minghou)

Yong Ho Deng became the first Headmaster of the school when it was completed in 1946.

In 1948 Chang Chung Ching (photo above taken in 1953) was the Headmaster from 1948 to 1949. He came back as Headmaster again in 1951.

Most of the rubber tapping families sent their children to this school to save time basically. Sending them further in land or to Marudi took too much time and effort. The adults and even children were needed at home to do farm work.

In 1956 the four class rooms were ot adequate so a new building was planned. In 1961 there were more tha 200 students who moved into the new school building, with 6 teachers.

In 1969 another building was completed.  By the 1970's with economic development and political changes, the school population dwindled and only 4 teachers were teaching in the school  with less than 140 students.

The school was closed down completely a few years ago.
