Baram Tales : Monkey Fur Hat
Grandfather Ngitun of Pa Ukat is a creative craftsman, good with his hands and does a lot of farm work besides helping his fellowmen repair their houses.
He goes into the jungle to herd his buffaloes and occasionally hunt for food.
He has trapped more than 88 monkeys in the last two years and he makes fur hats out of the monkey skins. Here is an example of his work, a wooden hat stand he made himself. It is very interesting sight, so far away from the milliners' shops of London.
There are hundreds of monkeys in Pa Ukat, trying to eat every fruit they can lay their hands on.
He was a skilled housebuilding "labourer" in the 60's in Miri.
