Shoe Shine Girl : Beijing

I was in Beijing for a short stay, enjoyed some shopping and at the same time saw some old streets of the city for a few hours before coming back to Sarawak.Image may contain: 1 person

My group stayed at an old hutong converted small hotel which provided us a Qing ambience and we ate old Beijing food to our hearts' delight.

The humble shoe shine girl, who was trying to promote her brand of shoe creams, polish and cloth, came to where I was standing. A few cooks from the restaurant were having their afternoon rest. She quickly bent down and apply all her different liquid polish on their sports shoes, etc.

She was so desperate in her marketing. The cook was reading his handphone and let her do her polishing. I suppose he was just so use to people who promote their products.

It was a hot summer day and the paleness of her skin could be seen. She did not look 18 but she already had very strong hands. May be this was her summer job and she would be applying for a place at university.

But then there are millions of youths who are migrant workers from the countryside hoping to make it rich in the streets of Beijing.
