Great Grandfather Tiong King Kee always welcomed his grand children back from boarding school. the Hua Hong manager's quarters would be full of happy children. They included my Aunties Heng, Chiew, Pick, Gie and Hong ,and Uncles Hua , Pang, Soon and Yu King who were all boarders of Yuk Ing Girls School and the Anglo Chinese Boys' School.
After the evening meal, all the grand children would hoover around great grandfather who was a devout Methodist. He said his grace at meal times and prayed often. On Sundays he would take the boat and cross the Rajang to worship in Masland Church. He was the contractor who built the Masland Church and the Yuk Ing Girls School.
My aunts remember him fondly. They had enjoyed bonding with him in the school holidays.
摏 zyung or zyiing
Great grandfather would enjoy a good evening of "gentle hammering or pounding" from his grand children, especially those who wanted to get treats like the Gang Gang Tong suspended high up in the
room, kept in the tin by a pulley system.
After half an hour or even more of gentle hammering or pounding , zyung or zyiing , Great Grandfather would award the happy kids with the sweets.
These would be the few years before the Japanese arrived. Great Grandfather passed away in 1943 before he turned 75. And in the same year, Grandmother Wong also passed away.
