Sibu Tales : Thoughts of Jelly Pisang

Image may contain: drink

I bought a dozen of these beautiful antique glasses from Sibu as keepsakes before I moved to Miri in 1987. I had thought of making jelly pisang, a wonderful jelly with ripe bananas and a dash of evaporated milk.

This jelly pisang was very special because my father was fond of the owner of Ban Chuang Coffee shop and his Kopi-o. He would drop by the coffee shop after work, with us in tow. As the eldest I had more opportunities of having jelly pisang because as more kids started going to school, my father also took us less to the coffee shop, also partly because he started playing mahjong at the Sarawak Recreation Club. Incidentally, he never ordered Kampua for us as we had to go home as early as possible. I supposed he just liked the thought of sitting in a coffee shop and picking up some news. Today, men I suppose have their whatsapp group chats.

When we bought our first kerosene powered fridge, my mother allowed us to make our own jelly pisang, if we could buy jello from the Far East Supermarket.

By then we started enjoying icecream and other desserts.

There is one recipe from Yien King Restaurant which we never managed to get - the beautiful Jelly Custard or was it mousse? My family loved ordering it whenever we had relatives coming to Sibu.

Jelly Pisang also reminded me of my girls' hockey days. It was fun eating some jelly pisang after the training.
