Sibu : The Watch Tower of Sibu Prison

Definitely no civilian would be allowed to climb up the Sibu Prison watch tower , for security reasons of course. Barb wires are still around. The days of curfew, insurgency etc in Sibu, had a special effect on me : I traumatized by the sight of barb wires.

When I visited the Great Wall of China I was able to climb up this watch tower with Wong Meng Lei and my Sibu gang. This watch tower was built around 500 BC.

This Sibu prison watch tower is more than 50 years old and is constructed from sturdy wood called belian.

As a student I used to cycle past the Sibu Prison for three reasons - my four oclock Girls Hockey practice every day, my Saturday afternoon Girl Guide activities and my frequent visits to my cousins at Sg. Bakong when my maternal Grandmother came to stay with them.

Then life in Sibu was quite dramatically changed by the curfews of the 1970's.
