Grandfather's Bougainvilleas

Bougainvilleas were probably brought over by the Foochows when they migrated to Sibu.

According to my grandfather, they brought seeds of vegetables in cotton bagts and cuttings of bamboos and other plants to Sarawak. The migrants came in several batches, while many new comers came in subsequent years too. Thus new crops, plants were introduced to Sarawak.

My grandfather himself told us that he brought cuttings of flowers from Minqing when he came over.

One of his beloved flowering plant was the bouganvillea which he grew wherever he went. He also cultivated canna lilies and crotons besides others. Thus his garden was very pretty and well maintained.

One of his special hobbies was making wreaths for funerals, as free gifts to the community. Thus he needed a lot of flowers.

Another flowering plant he grew was the Chern Mi Lang. (another post)
