We were lucky to have a cousin from the ulu visiting us and he came with 2 kg of wild boar meat. He had shot the wild pig early in the morning, a day before he came down to Miri. It isn't easy now to get wild boars with all the problems involving the African Swine Fiver.
So I had a stew out of part of the gift, and I made 6 burgers for every one, for early morning coffee.
This is just a record of how hard it is now to get wild boar meat in the ulu. Our up river relatives do not now have the opportunities to go hunting as game is very very limited now.
It is good that most of our relatives who live in the longhouse can buy fish caught in the river at prices controlled by the Tuai Rumah of village chief. My relatives in Bakong can even buy ikan Bertutu at RM12.00 per kg. The fish costs RM75 per kg in the market or Chinese restaurants.
